Having confidence in God

Have you ever been in a situation where you were shaken to your very core? Life is like that. It can knock you off your feet. The truth is we all go through such seasons at some point of time or the other.

When you’re in the middle of a dark season it can cause you to question God’s goodness. Our worst doubts and insecurities are revealed. We can even doubt God’s intentions.

Why is He punishing me? Why is this happening to me? What did I do? What should I do?

We feel vulnerable and lost and very lonely. During such seasons can we say that God is good? Can we trust Him? Do we surrender completely to His will? What do you do when the people around you misunderstand your struggles and make snap judgments? When they tell you to get over it? Do you still hear the voice of God? Do you still remember his promises over the voices of doubts around you?

Why do we go through trials?

The below verses give us a picture. Becoming mature in our character will ultimately make us more like Christ.

The testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
James 1:3,4

we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.
Romans 5:3‭-‬4

Sometimes it’s discipline. As human beings we’re prone to making mistakes; some innocent, some deliberate. Sometimes our problems arise because of our own bad decisions and habits. The important thing to focus on is not the discipline but the love of the father.

because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Proverbs 3:12

God helps people through other people. Our suffering and testimony can help others. How we relate to other’s pain are through our own pain and experiences. For instance, people who have experienced death of a family member can relate to others who have experienced loss. People who have experienced divorce can relate to the pain of separation.

What should we do in such a situation?

We should do what we can. We can control our actions and responses. Most importantly, we can control what we believe. Our faith is strengthened by believing in God’s goodness and His plan for our lives and our faith is tested not only daily but every moment. We need His grace during this time. Therefore, we need to make a decision to choose God over everything.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11

The rest lies in surrender to God’s will. It’s hard and it doesn’t come naturally but we can do it when we know the character of God, that He is good and He is faithful. It takes faith to believe that God is good in the midst of suffering. Even if you don’t have the faith, God can help you with that. When we surrender, we receive the peace that He has promised us, peace to endure the season. Let us be like David who was confidently assured in God’s goodness.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Psalms 27:13
